FRIDAY HARBOR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

2 0 0 2   -   2 0 0 3

Since it is our goal at Friday Harbor High School and your goal as well, that every student graduate from high school, please pay close attention to minimum Graduation Requirements as you plan.  Remember, you cannot graduate without completing the following:

Students must earn 16.5 credits in required classes and 5.5 credits in elective classes for a minimum of 22 credits in grades 9-12.  However, it is highly recommended that students take advantage of program options and elective opportunities beyond the minimum  credit requirement and take up to 24 credits while at Friday Harbor High School.

                                                Required Credits                      16.5 Credits

                                                Elective Credits                          5.5 Credits

High School Graduation – 22 credits or more

A minimum of 5.5 elective credits must be taken, but it is expected that students take more electives to round out career or cultural interests and to meet additional post-secondary college entrance requirements.

Students must complete all of these requirements in order to be eligible to participate in Friday Harbor High School commencement exercises.  It is important to remember that seniors who wish to participate in the graduation commencement exercises must be enrolled as a full time student the semester prior to graduation (2/3 semester credits or 4 classes).

Reminders:

·        Students must be enrolled in 2.50 credits to be eligible for the Honor roll

·        Students must also be enrolled in 2.50 credits to be eligible for co-curricular activities

·        Second semester seniors on track for graduation must be enrolled in at least 2.0 credits to be eligible for co-curricular activities

One-half credit is given for each semester class.  Students need to complete a minimum of 22 credits to graduate.  Students who elect to repeat a class to raise their grade or to earn credit for a course will receive an “NC” in place of the lower grade on their transcript.  Students will not receive “double credit” for the same course.

REQUIRED COURSES

(Each semester course is worth .5 credit; a full year course is worth 1.0 credit)

English, 8 semesters

These include 1 required class in grade 9; 1 required class in grade 12.  AP English courses are automatically applied to the English requirement.

Replacement Credit Policy

Only credits and grades earned within FHHS will replace the grades earned in a previous semester(s) work (i.e. grade earned in History of the United States taken at FHHS can only be replaced by another semester of History of the United States taken at FHHS).  The “better” of the two grades will be used in calculating GPA and previous grades will be changed to NC (No Credit).  Always contact your school counselor for clarification.

Credit Retrieval

Students may file an application or appeal/request to the principal and counselor for special consideration regarding Credit Retrieval, Sports Option Credit, Alternative Learning Program, and Transfer of Correspondence credits.

Transcript Request

It is the student’s responsibility to request an official transcript from any institution attended when completing the college application process.

College Enrichment Classes

An opportunity for academic advanced high school students to take college level courses toward the end of their high school program will be offered.  The principal’s approval is required if the classes are used for high school graduation credit.  Students who enroll in this program are responsible for tuition costs and fees and transportation as applicable.

Running Start

Running Start is a program made available in Washington state public schools.  This program is in partnership with community colleges and is available to high school students at the junior and senior level.  It allows qualified students to take college courses and apply the credits toward potential college degrees as well as their diploma.   Students are encouraged to contact the counselor if they are interested in this program.

Recommended Courses For The College Bound

Most four-year institutions require a specific subject pattern for entrance.  Students are encouraged to check with the college to determine the required courses for entrance.  It is highly recommended that college-bound students elect to take as many English, Math, Foreign Language, Social Studies, and Science courses as their schedule will allow and maintain a full course load their senior year.

Advanced Placement (A.P.) Options

(Over a four year time period)

A.P. Biology                                        A.P. Comp & Literature

A.P. Chemistry or Physics                  A.P. Calculus

A.P. Environmental Science                A.P. U.S. History

A.P. American Government                A.P. Studio Art

A.P. European History

What is the Advanced Placement (AP) Program?

The Advanced Placement program consists of college-level courses and exams for secondary school students.  Over 90 percent of the colleges give credit for advanced placement to students whose AP examination grades are considered acceptable, (3,4,5).

An AP course is challenging and stimulating. Compared to other high school courses - these courses often take more time, require more work, give greater opportunity for individual progress and accomplishment, and the courses go into greater depth.

Special Education

The goal of the special education department is to provide an individually designed program for each student to meet the needs outlined in his/her Individualized Education Plan (IEP).  Emphasis is on vocational skills, self-management skills, basic academic skills and providing support in required courses.  The learning environment can be in the resource room, a work placement, the regular classroom, or a combination of settings.  Course curriculum materials can be modified, supplemental materials added or adapted to ensure that learning is meaningful.  Curriculum expectations can be modified by changing the quantity and pace of work expected from a student and by varying the methods of assessment.

Community colleges were originally intended to be a step between high school and college for students who could not immediately afford college or who did not meet admission standards.  However, many A.A. degrees are similar to the specialty certificate, vocational in nature.  Students wishing to use their A.A. degree as the basis for transferring to a four-year college must plan their course work carefully.

Generally, community colleges all offer the same courses and programs.  In reality, there are differences in courses offered and vocational programs.  Students interested in this option should research community colleges to find the program which best fits his or her future plans.

Colleges and universities offer a variety of degrees in diverse fields.  Select the college of your choice for its size, location, expense, quality of specific programs of interest, graduate programs, etc.  Selection of college as a goal should fit with your long-term career goals.

As a point of information, most four-year colleges expect students to take a foreign language and advanced courses for elective choices.  In addition, leadership and community service experience are recommended as qualities needed for admission.
