FRIDAY HARBOR HIGH SCHOOL

Technology In Progress - TIP

The Technology In Progress (TIP) idea is to identify a small group of students who have a natural affinity for technology, and who exhibit the proper moral and ethical values necessary for work.  These students are then coordinated and included into the school’s information technology team.  This method provides much needed support for the school, as well as opportunity for the student.

Our TIP efforts are being implemented in three phases:

Phase One – 2002-03

·        Identify students through the computer classes at Friday Harbor High School (FHHS)

·        Manage student involvement through the technology instructor and programs

·        Develop a communication system for reporting tech problems throughout FHHS

·        Coordinate repair and troubleshooting time after school and before school, as a start

·        Document student work hours for local scholarship credit and academic credit as appropriate.

·        Provide paid stipends for students who take responsibility for major work projects with deadlines.

Phase Two – 2003-04

·        Develop a class for these students that furthers their formal training

·        Coordinate repair and troubleshooting time for students, both during and after school

·        Provide class credit in addition to local scholarship credit

·        Include students in FHHS and District Tech Team

Phase Three – 2004-05

·                     Hire students as district employees for tech support at all schools

·                     Provide class credit, local scholarship credit, and pay for student work

Initially students will help with tasks such as inventory and computer set-up and maintenance.  As students’ skills and understanding increases so will their responsibilities.  The level of student training and compensation is intended to increase along with the students’ developing skills and increased responsibilities.

Friday Harbor High School Computer Use and Ethics Policy

General Computer Use

STUDENTS’ RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Students at Friday Harbor High School (FHHS), upon completing the Computer Licensing Program and receiving a license, are permitted to use all student workstations at FHHS.  Students may have access (in compliance with copyright and licensing laws) to school district programs intended for student usage and to use these resources to achieve their goals.  They may also use student workstations to display their own personal work within reason and as resources allow.  In order to assure that these workstations remain available and working well, the following expectations have been established:

1.   No applications, games, or files including shareware, “freeware,” and personal games of any kind will be saved onto the servers at FHHS or the hard drives of any workstation without the written permission of the Librarian/Media Specialist, Technology Specialist, or authorized and appropriate personnel following established guidelines.

2.   No student may delete, remove, or copy programs from computers.

3.   Students agree to use appropriate language, artwork, and other content in all programs and documents in use or created on the computers in accordance with fair use and copyright laws.

4.   Students agree not to alter desktop settings, passwords, or edit start-up files.

5.   Students will carry their computer licenses and place them in the designated place on the computer in use and will be unable to use the computer without their licenses.

6.   Students will not loan or exchange their licenses with others.

7.   Students are responsible for physical damage to computer equipment.

8.   Students may not use log-ons, passwords, or files specifically assigned to another person nor allow other people to use their personal log-ons or password.

9.   Students agree that the result of any violations of this agreement will be the suspension of the license to use computer workstations at FHHS and may be subject to regular school discipline.  The length of suspension will be decided by agreement with the appropriate authority.

Network Use Agreement

Network use and activities are monitored by the network administrator.  Students will be responsible for all activities that occur under their personal log-ons.  All computer use and policy guidelines must be followed.  Students will receive training in network and Internet skills and must obtain a network license in order to use network or Internet resources.

1.   In addition to a demonstration of appropriate networking and Internet skills, students agree to limit their home directory storage to 5MB of space.  Failure to do so will result in the network administrator requesting the student to make space.  If the student does not comply within two days, the network administrator will delete files. This policy includes games sent via e-mail.  Electronic mail found in excess of 5MB of storage space will be deleted without warning, due to limited e-mail resources.  (Students in special technology classes will be given additional storage place during the term.)

2.   Students will agree to not install or download any software or programs from Internet. Access is intended SOLELY for education use.

3.   In addition, student work (including web pages) produced with District technology resources or published with these resources must comply with Fair Use and copyright law as pertaining to educational materials and student use as well as following school policy in regard to appropriate educationally relevant content.

4.   The proliferation of games or other trivia stored on the server is strictly prohibited.  The network administrator will delete any games found on the server unless written authorization is given by a teacher demonstrating that the game is to be used in curriculum.

5.   Students will only store documents or information in the folder designated for their use located in the student home directory.  Other acceptable storage areas must be approved by authorized and appropriate staff.

6.   Students also agree to follow the school policy regarding e-mail etiquette included with this document.

7.   Failure to comply with these conditions will result in immediate revocation of network/Internet licensing for one month for the first offense and an unlimited period of time for subsequent offenses.  Offenses are also subject to regular school disciplinary action as appropriate.

FHHS E-Mail Etiquette and Policy

Electronic mail, or “e-mail” for short, provides an easy-to-use, efficient means of communicating with other people.  The following guidelines for preparing and sending e-mail are designed to ensure that everyone uses e-mail in a similar manner and for its intended use:

·        E-mail should not be used as a form of entertainment (for example, chain letters).  These types   of messages annoy other people and they use up system resources and disk space.  District policy prohibits obscene, profane, or otherwise offensive material from being broadcast across the network.

·        District policy also prohibits the use of network or e-mail resources to disseminate political or advertising purposes.

·        When writing e-mail, keep your messages as brief as possible.

·        Make sure you know who your e-mail is being sent to before sending it.  If you are sending to an entire e-mail group, think about whether every member of the group really needs to read your message.  Be selective when forwarding or replying to an e-mail message.  Once again, think about who really needs to see the message.

·        Do not send junk mail, random mail, or “Who are you?” messages.  Junk mail is just as unwanted as regular junk mail.

·        It is much easier to read a mixture of upper and lower case letters.  Do not write mail in all uppercase letters; it is considered to be the equivalent of shouting!

·        Save only important messages in your folders and delete unneeded mail often.  Saved mail draws upon a pool of shared space.  If this space becomes used up, we will be forced to restrict the amount of mail you can save.

·        Never try to access someone else’s account.  Do not attempt to determine someone else’s password, or to obtain the use of any account but your own.

·        Change your password often, especially if you suspect that another user has discovered it. Always be sure to log off before leaving a computer.  You are ultimately responsible for whatever e-mail abuses occur from your account, even if someone else stole your password and logged onto your account without your consent.

·        E-mail is a privilege, not a right.  Any abuse of your privileges can result in the disabling or loss of your account.  When an e-mail account is issued to a student, that student receives authorization to use system resources and disk space; this authorization is non-transferable, even though all accounts are owned by the San Juan Island School District.  All data within an account is private and is “owned” by the user.

·        The sending of unsolicited obscenities and electronic harassment is in direct violation of these guidelines and may result in probation, the loss of your account, and regular school disciplinary action as appropriate.

Dear Parents and Guardians:

We would like to take this opportunity to inform you that your child has been added to the approved Friday Harbor High School (FHHS) Technology Information Project (TIP) list.  Final acceptance into the TIP program will be based upon your child’s schedule and will not be known until the start of school.  Students may still not be in the scheduled TIP class if a direct conflict occurs with a required common core class (math, science, English or social studies.)

This year will be full of many exciting opportunities and projects for our TIP class.  TIP students can expect a busy year as we begin re-assessing and re-allocating our technology to teachers and classrooms.  Students will immediately dive into hands-on projects and will learn a diverse set of skills including hardware and software installations, networking and wiring.  Recommended TIP students will be required to attend a special technology camp on August 24 and 25.  In addition, TIP students are expected to help with the technology portion of registration.  Students who are unable to assist during registration should call stating so, and are asked to plan on spending time after school during the first two weeks of school helping with initial set-up and configuring of machines as part of their TIP class responsibilities.

In the past, students have been divided into teams with returning second year TIP students as leaders.  Students rotate through focus areas gaining skill on both Macintosh and PC platforms.  This year, students also have extensive academic learning opportunities in technology thanks to a donation of training materials from Microsoft Press.  TIP is a hands-on experiential class, and students will not have homework or reading unless they choose to sample these Microsoft certification materials.

TIP students are the front line technology support team for the school and staff and students will be expected to volunteer time after school and on occasional Saturdays.  This volunteer time is on a needs-basis only and will occur periodically throughout the school year.  This may be counted towards community service hours and towards the required TIP Program hours or TIP program or the National Honor Society community service requirement or Dollars for Scholars community service.

Classroom volunteers are always welcome.  If you would like to volunteer to assist in the classroom, please leave a message or e-mail or make contact with us at the Open House in the fall.  Also contact us if you have specific skills in technology and would like to share and present skills to students in a workshop or seminar format.   Do not hesitate to call us if you have questions.  We look forward to meeting.

Best wishes,

Eric Nieland, Technology Teacher / TIP Coordinator

Dear “Techie”  FHHS Students:

Congratulations!  You are eligible to attend the 1st Annual Tech Academy ever held at FHHS prior to the start of school.  The Academy will take place on August 24 and 25 from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon.  It will begin promptly with an opening workshop in the FHHS Tech Building.

Students are asked to call Janet Chamberlain at 378-5215 to reserve their spot for the Academy.  Due to the fact that there are over four times more students eligible than Academy positions available, students will be accepted on a “first come first served basis”.  Eligible students will not be guaranteed a Tech Assistant or TIP Program position due to scheduling conflicts, but they will be able to use their Tech Academy experience for the National Honor Society and Dollars for Scholars or for Community Service Independent Study credit (.5).

We look forward to seeing you at our exciting new Tech Academy.  Call today to reserve your place.

Sincerely,

Marilyn Luckman

Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians of Potential TIP Students:

Your student has indicated an interest in applying for the Friday Harbor High School (FHHS) TIP Program (Technology Information Project).  In order to be accepted into the program, a student must submit an application to participate in the Program.  The TIP Program was created to give FHHS students the latest in computer science experience and challenge.  The TIP Program will provide students the opportunity to work on and understand the entire district’s networking system.

Students will learn skills such as installation of computer software, management of systems software in both Windows and Mac platforms, and to troubleshoot problems that occur (and occur they do!); wire, install and maintain network concentrators; and set up the Internet resource management system among other skills.

The FHHS TIP class will be scheduled as a yearlong elective*.  It may require interested students to modify their existing class schedule in order to participate.  The class meets every day.  Eric Nieland will serve as the supervisor and instructor.  TIP students working out of Friday Harbor High School may be assigned to serve as mentors and instructors periodically, as well in the middle school and elementary school.  Students will begin learning the skills and knowledge as listed and then will be assigned to various departments and/or teachers to oversee and maintain their classroom technology at Friday Harbor High School.

Your son or daughter must be of the highest ethical integrity and a person strongly interested in learning technology.  It is paramount that learning, knowing, and demonstrating the highest ethical standards be followed since they will have access to all computer records and systems in use at FHHS.  A first experience will be appreciating the requirement of these attitudes.

Final acceptance will be based upon a variety of criteria as well as the individual student’s schedule and credit requirements.  The FHHS TIP Program uses a peer-tutoring mentorship model.  As such, the program maintains a 1:1:1 ratio of 9th, 10th, and11th grade students.  In addition, research shows high school to be a critical time for female student involvement in technology and so an attempt is made to recruit female students and foster their interests in technology.

If you have any questions about the TIP Program, please feel free to contact Eric Nieland or Marilyn Luckman (378-5215).  If your child wishes to become involved in this program at FHHS, please fill out and sign the attached permission form.

*It can be two separate periods each term.

Dear Parents:

Your student has the opportunity to receive an electronic network account or access, and needs your permission to do so. Among other advantages, your student will be able to communicate with other schools, colleges, organizations and individuals around the world through Internet and other electronic information systems and networks. Internet is a system which links smaller computer networks, creating a large and diverse network. Internet allows your student, through electronic mail (e-mail) and other means to reach out to many other people to share information, learn concepts and research subjects. These are significant learning opportunities to prepare your student for the future.

With this educational opportunity also comes responsibility. It is important that you and your student read the enclosed informed consent form, school district procedures and other material, and discuss it together. When your student is given an account and password to use on the computer, it is extremely important that the rules are followed. Inappropriate use will result in the loss of the privilege to use this educational tool, and other disciplinary action if appropriate. Parents, remember that you are legally responsible for your student's actions.

Please stress to your student the importance of using only his or her account password, and of keeping it private from other students. Your student should never let anyone else use his/her password to access the network. Your student is responsible for any activity that happens in his/her account.

We have established procedures and rules regulating the materials that students may search for on the network and we do filter Internet content for pornography, but please be aware that there is unacceptable and controversial material and communications on the Internet that your student could access. It is not possible for us to always provide direct supervision of all students. We encourage you to consider the potential of your student being exposed to inappropriate material in your decision of whether or not to sign the informed consent form.

If you have any questions please contact me at (360) 378-5215. Please return signed informed consent forms to us as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Marilyn Luckman, Principal

Dear Parent or Guardian:

The San Juan Island School District would like to offer students access to our electronic communication network known as the Washington Education K20Network.  Access to this network from school computers will provide the following services:

Electronic Mail: An electronic post office box will enable e-mail communication with other staff and student members of Washington Education K20Network.  E-mail communication to other users on the Internet will also be possible.

Internet Access: The Internet is a network of networks and is the prototype of the communication and information highway of the future.  The Internet consists of over 10,000 computer networks in over 120 countries.  It is estimated to have over 15 million users and is growing by 150,000 users every month.  It is a voluntary association of diverse communication and information networks involving universities, government organizations, and commercial enterprises and network providers.  Through Washington Education K20Network, students will have access to hundreds of databases, libraries and computer services located around the world.

We believe that citizens of the 21st Century cannot be prepared for the future without learning to use this global information network.  It provides access not only to an unprecedented range of information search and management tools, but also to other resources that cannot be reached in any other way.

In using Internet, students may encounter material that parents and San Juan Island School District staff would find objectionable.  While we emphatically discourage access to such information, it is not possible for us to prevent it.  Intentionally accessing, storing or forwarding such material constitutes a violation of Washington Education K20Network Access Policies and may result in a revocation of the account and all the privileges that it offers.

Please read the San Juan Island School District Network Access Agreement and Release Form and the FHHS Computer Use and Ethics Policy specifying access policies of other networks that constitute our path of Internet access.  Violations of the provisions stated in the policies may result in suspension or revocation of network access and related privileges.  In order to be given an account, any student who is under eighteen years of age must have the permission of a parent or legal guardian on the Access Release Form and the FHHS Consent Form attached.
