About FHMS

Friday Harbor Middle School occupies the historical school building at 85 Blair Avenue that once housed the elementary school and district office.  Renovated in 1997-98, FHMS retains the character and look of the old building, while inside it is modern and functional.  Five new classrooms (including two great science labs) and a new multi-purpose Commons were added at the time of renovation.

In the fall of 2003, 220 sixth, seventh and eighth graders called FHMS home.  There are three sections of each grade with the 6th grade the largest and seventh grade the smallest.

FHMS works hard to get all students ready for success in high school (and beyond).  Our students score very well on the state-mandated assessments at 7th grade – the Washington Assessment of Student Learning, or WASL as it is called.

Our percentages of students meetings or surpassing standard are among the very highest in the state.  We are proud of our achievement and maintain a culture of focus and success on learning.

Curriculum at FHMS

We have a six-period day.  Four classes, the ‘core classes’ include a two-hour Humanities block (Language Arts/Social Studies), Math and Science.  In addition, all 6th and 7th grade students take Health and Reading for one semester, every other day. 6th graders also take Computers every other day for a semester.  All students take PE every other day.  This year, just under half the 220 students take Band every day in three different periods.  Students who do not take Band, get exploratory classes on an as-available basis, such as Art, Drama, Science Projects, Problem Solving, and Geography.

Students must pass all their core classes or successfully complete Summer School to move to the next grade.

Activities

We have several clubs: Builders Club (associated with Kiwanis, Chess Club and Geography Club.  7th grade students publish a newspaper and an 8th grade class produces a wonderful, color Yearbook of nearly 100 pages.

We sponsor academic competitions such as Math Olympiad, Spelling Bee, Knowledge Bowl and Geography Bee.

Most sports are offered by local organizations – most coordinated by Island Rec (378-4953).  However, FHMS offers girls volleyball in the fall and middle school track in the spring.
