2008-2009 BRAGS
Well our first year of learning was a year of success. With the support of a community dedicated to the health and well-being of their school we deviated from the typical school lunch model where ketchup is considered a vegetable and a pizza sauce. The Experience Food Project brought in Chef Andy Radzialowski and team in order to change the way we nourish our children. EFP was dedicated to the research and development of a new state-wide lunch model that embraces healthy practices and sustainability. The participation and support of this community enabled the San Juan Island School District to adopt this model and focus on our own district.
During the 2008 – 2009 school year…..
Served over 82,000 meals to SJISD students and staff
Served over 7,300 meals to Spring Street, Paideia and HeadStart
Volunteers served hundreds of community members at our Community Dinners
Hosted four Culinary Arts students a week in the Central High School Kitchen
Visual Arts students created beautiful mandalas, food sculptures and paintings
Implemented composting, worm bins and waste management to lessen our footprint
