Your New Laptop
Your New Laptop
What you have: a Hewlett Packard ________________. It comes with a docking station, a large external monitor, mouse, extra keyboard, power cable, network cable and carrying case. Speakers are built into the laptop for sound. The laptop is portable and may be removed from the docking station for use at home, another classroom or for travel to classes and conferences.
The docking station provides power to the laptop and continuously charges the laptop’s battery. It allows the current external hardware (extra keyboard, mouse, external monitor, network connection, local printer) to be connected “permanently” so that you don’t have to uncable your laptop if you want to use it for travel (see below).
Power on: press the on/off switch at the northwest corner of the keyboard (picture). The initial screen (gray) will give you an option for “ docked” “undocked”. Press the enter key to continue. You will next see the normal logon screen…proceed as you would with any SJISD computer. Turn the wireless button off (blue light will turn off) (need picture).
Power off: use the normal shutdown procedure (Start, _____________)
The laptop may be removed from the docking station with power on, but make sure you log off the network before doing so.
Care and feeding of your laptop:
No liquids or food around the machine. Liquids or sticky materials spilled onto the keyboard can permanently damage the machine.
Screens (both the internal monitor as well as the external monitor): use only approved screen cleaners or a soft cloth dampened with plain water. Do NOT use any ammonia-based product like Windex—they will ruin the screen. Do NOT use post-it notes or scotch tape on the screen itself. Avoid touching the screen with your fingers.
Temperature: keep the laptop at room temperature. Do not place in a sunny window where it is likely to overheat. Do not leave it in your car for extended periods, particularly in hot weather. If you forget and leave it in your car for several hours in cold weather (less than 40°F), allow it to warm up to at least (that may take an hour) before powering up. Keep all vents open and unblocked. Use your laptop on a hard surface where it will get good airflow, do not use on a bed or soft furniture.
Travel: Log off and shut down the power. Note: it is okay to remove or dock your laptop with power on. Press the buttons on the right and left top side of the docking station (marked with __________) to release lock. Lift the laptop off the docking station--labels on the docking station show you how. Place the laptop in the large pocket of the carry case with the Velcro strap. Fasten strap to secure laptop. Take the mouse out of the docking station if you will want to use it. Make sure the portable power cord is in the case.
At your destination: Remove laptop from case, attach power cord at _________, internet connections _________, mouse cord may be inserted in any of the 4 available USB slots (rectangular, marked with [USB symbol here]). Power on normally, use the _____ option.
Battery: you will have approximately 3 hours of battery power, however it’s usually easier to find a power source and plug in the cord that is in your carry case. If you use battery power (ie, during a meeting), a beep tone (?) will sound when the battery is getting low. Plugging the laptop into a power source will give you a full 3-hour charge after about 40 minutes.
Internet connections at home and on the road:
If you have DSL at home, you’ll need to plug the computer into your internet connection using your existing cable or the cable included in your carry case. Broadband and dial-up users, please contact the Network Administrator for assistance. Wireless users: ________
