The Griffin Bay secondary program encompasses grades 9-12. The hours per week would be 27.5 hours of instruction. While we do not require that you log the hours of learning, you will be required to communicate your learnings to your certificated teacher on at least a weekly basis.
The learning environment can be either fully remote in your own home or learning space, or hybrid program that includes taking classes at Griffin Bay School or Friday Harbor High School.
Student Learning Plans
A student-learning plan will be created with the certificated teacher assigned to your student within the first days of school, and this will be done in collaboration with the student. This learning plan will include instructional time and curriculum in English Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science, Fine Arts, and Fitness/Health. The teacher will walk you through the types of curriculum Griffin Bay has available. Secondary courses are primarily online but may include some traditional work as directed by the educational plan. As stated, this may also be a collaboration with the high school. The curriculum and materials must be approved by the public school and by the teacher.
Credit Retrieval
For students who need to retrieve credit for graduation from another school, such as FHHS, it is possible to enroll for one or more classes and still be considered a student of the default school. A student that takes 60% or more of the classes from a given school will graduate from that school. For example, the student that takes 60% of the courses from FHHS and 40% from GBS, then the default school will be FHHS and guidelines for graduation apply.
Weekly Meetings with Instructor
Each week you and your student will contact the teacher and report on how the curriculum is working, ask questions, and receive feedback from the teacher. If the student-learning plan needs to be updated or amended, that can occur through those contacts. The teacher will be checking for student progress and will make a determination on progress. If the student is not making progress, the teacher can help create an intervention plan to increase outcomes.
College and Career Ready
Griffin Bay School secondary program also includes college admission guidance and support, alternative pathways to graduation, career and technical education opportunities and development of a high school and beyond plan. The objective is to ensure that students are college and career ready when they graduate.

If you have a curriculum you are interested in having our school review, please let your teacher know but until it is a district approved curriculum, we may not be able to approve it for use for your child’s program.
