San Juan Island School District

  • Planning for the 2021 School Year

    Although we are all hopeful that San Juan County will be in the final phase of recovery and re-opening by fall 2020, our future remains uncertain. Because of this, we must build contingency plans for the upcoming school year. Teams from each school have been working to develop potential reopening plans. We have also gathered information from parents and staff through a survey and in zoom meetings.

    We are not ready to publish a specific plan yet as the requirements from the State, CDC, and local health department change often. The goal is to continue this work through the summer and share with you the finalized plans by the middle of August.

    Our considerations include:

    • The physical, intellectual, and emotional health and safety of our staff, students, and families;
    • Predictable and consistent services and support for students, families, and staff with special attention given to reducing anxiety and stress for students and acknowledging the needs of families returning to work.
    • Approaches and practices that mitigate, monitor, and minimize spread of COVID-19;
    • Prioritizing anti-racist practices, including identity safety, culturally responsive teaching practices, and equity-focused resource allocation; and
    • Providing high quality, culturally responsive, and developmentally appropriate social emotional and academic learning.

    The best learning happens face to face and we hope eventually to return every student to the school sites. For now, while facing the unknown caused by this pandemic, we remain committed to maintaining safety for all.

    Our Commitment to Equity

    As we face the social turmoil shattering the hearts of our nation and communities, we, as a public education institution, must take time to reflect on our own practices as we seek to create a strong and positive environment for the education of ALL young people as they learn and grow.

    San Juan Island School District unequivocally stands for equity, and against racism and bigotry.  We must be a part of the solution.

    As a reminder to ourselves and to our community, we again share the committee work achieved last fall creating guiding principles that make up our collective Cultural Beliefs.

    Our Cultural Beliefs

    Engage the Community

          I will commit to engaging others in the process, and I will be an active participant in the school community.

           I will create safe and productive environments that embrace self-advocacy.

    Cultivate Equity

          I recognize, value and respect individual needs, identities, cultures, interests and strengths of all.

    Provide Opportunities

           I will provide opportunities to help you be successful on your path.

    Cultivate Global Awareness

          I will keep current on global issues and integrate these topics into community conversations and activities.

    Kari McVeigh, Superintendent (current), and

    Fred Woods, Future Superintendent (as of July 1, 2020)

    Promote excellence, engaging every student, every day, through superior instruction, high expectations and academic content that is both challenging and individually relevant.
