Mr. Tompkins

Bienvenidos, herzlich willkommen, welcome to all. I (Mr. Tompkins) am a second year English/social studies teacher and recent graduate of the University of Montana. Teaching in Friday Harbor is something of an Odyssean journey for me. As some of you may already know, I grew up on the island and graduated from Friday Harbor High in 2011. To be back has put me in a unique situation, not many new teachers can turn to the people who once taught them (and indeed, inspired them) for aid. I look forward to giving back to the community that helped form me. Helping students become strong writers and critical thinkers is a priority of mine, and I look forward to watching them grow and problem solve as we work our way through the humanities together. Working with the students, my fellow staff members, and the community I hope to help students engage in their education in ways that are creative, active, and intellectually stimulating.

A few words about who I am. I'm a big music fan and always willing to check out a new band. I enjoy spending my time exploring the great outdoors, primarily through snowboarding and hiking. I’ve spent the past four summers of my life being a commercial fisherman in Alaska. I’m an avid consumer of stories in any medium, books, podcasts, movies, video games, etc. (i.e. a nerd).
