About me
I was born and raised in Green Bay, WI (Titletown, USA, toilet paper capitol of the world) where I grew up hunting, fishing, sailing and working in my family's limestone mill. At 13, I went to high school in New York, and there, began writing poetry and getting into ridiculous, unwinnable debates with my friends. When I was 16, I sailed across the Atlantic ocean with my dad, brother and two friends. It was there, in the middle of that vast ocean, right in the middle of a huge storm, that I realized just how insignificant I was in comparison to how huge nature was, and I fell in love with the world for the first time. I also became attuned to how fragile life is. I went to Middlebury College in Vermont for my undergraduate degrees in English Literature and Studio Art. I specialized in engraving metal by hand. While there, I made ends meet by shearing sheep in the winter and working as crew on sailboats in Europe during the summers. After graduation, I decided that I needed to become a farmer and so, naturally, moved to Hawaii where I grew water lilies and lotuses, kept bees, milked goats and managed a taro farm. I spent my free time spear fishing, free diving and hunting wild boars. Needing a break from paradise, I then moved to Colorado where I managed a business collecting and restoring antique printing presses in Silverton, a teeny town at 9800 feet elevation. One night, deep in winter, I woke up and I knew that I had to become a teacher, so I did. This will be my 17th year teaching English, though in my last school and in FH, I've also taught Aerospace Design and coached the Aerospace Engineering team to four world championships at NASA (one here in Friday Harbor!). I am also the Advisor to the FHHS National Honor Society. While not at school, I'm an active parent of two kids, am involved with 4H and enjoy raising sheep, fishing, crabbing, boating, playing the fiddle, and making art.
I’m looking forward to an amazing year!
