Friday Harbor High School is a small (310 students), rural high school located on San Juan Island in the northern area of Puget Sound, Washington.
Our Community
The island economy is predominantly tourist-based. We also have a large, seasonal retirement community. Predominantly middle class, the island has one of the lowest earned income levels and highest educational levels of any county in the state of Washington. Nonetheless, financial support for schools is very strong. In 1997, the community passed a school building bond by the largest percentage in the state. The bond paid for a complete reconstruction of the middle and high schools. The following year the community approved a four-year Maintenance and Operations Levy by more than 80%.
Our School
Friday Harbor High School is the only public high school on San Juan Island. Consequently, we provide a wide-ranging educational program and extensive co-curricular opportunities for students.
We offer a variety of art courses, very successful instrumental music programs, and an exciting and growing computer technology program. We have comprehensive Special Education services, English-as-a-Second Language instruction and support, alternative education options, and Advanced Placement courses (AP U.S. History, AP World History, AP Government, AP English Language and Composition, AP Literature, AP Spanish, AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, and AP Environmental Science).
We have three computer labs on campus. Our entire school is networked and every room has access to the network and through it access to the internet. Students have access to computers in the library from 7:45 in the morning until 4:30 in the afternoon.
Through Island Rec we provide thirteen varsity sports, cheerleading, a variety of club activities (from sailing to hiking), an annual play which is financially supported by and performed in our beautiful community theater.
Generally, expectations for students are focused on college attendance (50-60% of graduating students attend college directly out of high school). Students apply to and are accepted by colleges across the United States (graduates are attending Dartmouth College, Willamette University, University of Washington, Western Washington University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Bowdoin College, Wells College, Cornish College of the Arts, Eckerd College, Colby College, Stanford, NYU, Boston College, etc.).
