Transition to Kindergarten
San Juan Island School District began offering a Transition to Kindergarten (TK) program to 4-year-old students in the 2024-2025 school year. TK is a no-cost, full-day early learning program for 4-year-olds who do not have access to early learning experiences. The goal of the TK program is to provide a high-quality early learning experience that prepares students for a successful, seamless transition to kindergarten. Children may enter TK based on a pre-screening process to determine their need for additional early learning to prepare them for kindergarten the following year.
Like all kindergarten classes, this program is full day and follows the school year calendar.
To be eligible to enroll, a student must meet the following criteria:
- Be 4 years old by August 31 of the year they are starting TtK, but not 5 on this date.
- Live within the boundaries of San Juan Island School District.
- The family completes an interest survey.
- Priority enrollment may be given to children who do not have preschool experience or who demonstrate a need for guided support.
Eligible students have been invited to enroll in TK for the 2024-2025 school year.
-
Will my child need immunizations?
TK students must be up-to-date on all required immunizations prior to starting the program. Find out what immunizations are required in Washington state for kindergarten.
-
I'm interested. What's next?
Interest surveys have been reviewed and eligible students have been invited to enroll in TK for the 2024-2025 school year.
-
Is it a full-day program?
It is a full-day, full week program with the same schedule as Friday Harbor Elementary School. The program follows the San Juan Island School District Calendar.
-
Is there transportation?
Yes, your child can have access to school transportation.
-
Are lunch and breakfast available for students?
Yes! Students will have access to both breakfast and lunch services and can apply for free and reduced price meals. Find more information about free and reduced price meals here.
-
What does a typical day look like in a TK classroom?
The school day begins at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 2:45 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. On Wednesdays, school begins at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 1:30 p.m. TK students learn academic and social skills to prepare them for success in kindergarten. Students will also receive access to specials such as P.E. and music and attend lunch and recess just like they would in kindergarten.
-
Is there a cost for TK?
No, TK is free to all eligible students. Transition to Kindergarten students are funded as full-time students by the State of Washington, just like our K-12 students. This allows us to offer this program at no cost to San Juan Island families.
-
How is TK different from regular kindergarten?
Kindergarten is designed for children who are five years old on or before August 31. TK, which prepares children for traditional kindergarten, is designed for children who are four years old on or before August 31. Space in TK is limited and there is a selection process, while kindergarten is available for all students.
