Replacement of Existing Educational Programs and Operations (EP&O) Levy
On February 10, 2026, San Juan Island School District will ask voters to renew the four-year Educational Programs and Operations (EP&O) Levy.
What is the Levy?
This levy is a way for our community to raise local money for our schools.
-
It is NOT a new tax; it is a renewal of the funding we already have.
- The amount being asked is not more than the amount approved in 2022.
-
The State gives us "Basic Education Funding," but it is not enough to run all our current programs.
-
This local levy helps fill that gap. It makes up about 17.25% of the school district's $17.5 million yearly budget.
What Does This Local Money Pay For?
The funds from the Levy help pay for things that make our schools great, including:
-
Small Class Sizes: Keeping the number of students low so teachers can help everyone.
-
Key Staff: Paying for counselors and the school nurse.
-
Important Classes: Funding music, drama, art, science (STEM), and high-level (Advanced Placement) classes.
-
Extra Help: Paying for programs like summer school, after-school study sessions, and special education
-
Safe and Clean Schools: Covering the costs for janitors (custodial) and upkeep (maintenance).
-
Other Support: Providing healthy and fresh meals, support for English Language Learners, and alternative and non-traditional learning options.
What Happens Without It?
If the levy is not renewed, the school district would have to cut over $3 million from current programs and services.
